Pentyrch Rangers 2 V 2 Pentwn Dynamo
Having waited almost three months to play a competitive game of football, both teams were eager to get started. Not surprisingly, the players' touch, understanding and reaction times were not up to their usual standard for the first twenty minutes and there was plenty of wayward passing and control on both sides.
As the players took time to establish themselves, it was ten minutes before the game saw its first real attempt on goal. Pentwyn worked a shooting opportunity from close range, but George kept his focus and pulled off a good save.
Pentyrch began to settle into the game and were just that bit sharper. Tyrone and Doug were cutting out most of Pentwyn’s attacks. At the same time Nat, Liam, Harrison and Nick were giving Pentwyn no time on the ball. And With some neat link-up play out of defence Pentyrch looked the more threatening team.
On 25 minutes, George safely gathered the ball as a Pentwyn attack broke down. Seeing Callum on the shoulder of the last Pentwyn defender, George sent a well-judged long ball upfield. Callum used his pace to win the ball and loose a shot on the Pentwyn goal. Their goalkeeper got his hand to it but the shot was too fierce. Pentyrch Rangers 1 - 0 Pentwyn Dynamo.
From the restart Pentyrch immediately returned to the attack and win a free kick about thirty yards out from goal. Leigh lines up the free kick and crosses the ball to the far right post. Liam meets the cross and his looping header back across goal gives the Pentwyn goalie no chance. Pentyrch Rangers 2 - 0 Pentwyn Dynamo.
Now playing with increasing confidence and skill, Pentyrch work another shooting opportunity. Callum receives the ball on the edge of the box before laying it back to Will. From 25 yards Will’s shot is just over the crossbar. Still playing on the front foot and with 32 minutes gone, Callum bursts down the right before fizzing a cross to Leigh. Again the shot is just over.
Pentwyn begin to steady things and on 38 minutes a deceptively crafted shot from Danny almost finds the top right hand corner of the Pentyrch net, but George is alive to the threat and safely gathers in.
A minute later and Liam works some space in the Pentwyn penalty box before laying the ball back to Leigh; a fierce shot on target, but the goalie just manages to turn it behind for a corner.
Half Time: Pentyrch Rangers 2 - 0 Pentwyn Dynamo
Within a minute of the restart a sweeping attack sees Pentwyn get off a cracking shot on goal. George parries the ball away, but Huw is quickest to the rebound and heads home. Pentyrch Rangers 2 - 1 Pentwyn Dynamo.
In search of a quick counter, Lucas plays a ball out of defence to Leigh, who cuts in from the right and slips a diagonal through ball to Callum. He puts in a teasing cross, which Nat heads goalwards. But the Pentwyn goalie pulls off a good save.
In what was a reversal of the first half, the next thirty minutes saw Pentwyn launch wave after wave of attack as the fluency and composure went out of Pentyrch’s game. Last ditch defending limited Pentwyn strikes on goal. On at least two occasions Nick got in great covering tackles that denied Pentwyn clear strikes on goal.
On 72 minutes a chance to break the Pentwyn pressure saw Callum set off down the right before cutting inside. He passes to Will who splits the Pentwyn defence with an immediate return ball, but Callum’s shot is just wide.
Grateful for their narrow escape Pentwyn return to pressure for an equaliser. The Pentyrch defence ride their luck and hold firm. But as the game enters it's final seconds a Pentwyn chance on goal is cut short by a challenge that was probably the result of panic, tiredness and desperation. But a definite penalty. Danny stepped up to the mark and cooly slotted the ball home.
