Pentyrch Rangers 0 V 2 Rhiwbina
It's that time of the season when the match programme is disrupted by the weather. The result is that when games do come along it can take a while for players to switch on and find their feet - quite literally. This is the same for all teams, but when up against the top teams, they will take advantage of early mistakes. In today’s game Rhiwbina did just that, scoring an early goal and then holding on to see the game out.
After the usual five minute settling in period the game began promisingly enough for Pentyrch. Lucas sent a ball down the right-hand touchline to Callum who went past his man before cutting inside and getting off a shot. But the angle proved a little too tight.
On the 8th minute increasing Rhiwbina pressure resulted in a defence splitting through ball into the right side of the penalty box. But before Scott Lawrence could pull the trigger, Tyrone scrambled the ball behind to concede a corner. The resulting ball in was scrambled away but only as far as the edge of the box where Rhiwbina’s Dylan Amin fired in an unstoppable shot to give them the lead.
Going a goal behind is always difficult and made it even more difficult for a nervy Pentyrch team to get any rhythm into their game. Rhiwbina were claiming virtually every long ball out of the Pentyrch defence sending back wave after wave of attacks. On the 26th minute another defence splitting through ball down the Rhiwbina left resulted in a fierce low shot that was destined for goal. But a great save from George with his feet kept Pentyrch in the game.
Rhiwbina continued to maintain the pressure until half-time but Pentyrch held out. With superb positioning and timing Doug was making sure Rhiwbina had no further joy through the middle of the Pentyrch defence.
Half-time: Pentyrch Rangers 0 - 1 Rhiwbina
From the start of the second half Pentyrch took the game by the scruff of the neck. Within a minute, Harrison split the Rhiwbina defence with a great pass to Sam, but his shot was just over. A minute later and a weaving run by Callum forces a corner. Leigh sends it into the box and Rhiwbina concede another corner. Again Leigh fizzes a ball into the box. Harrison has his shot blocked on the line; from the rebound Nat also has his shot blocked. A minute later and a driving run by Callum down the wing and a cut inside ends with his shot skimming the crossbar. The Pentyrch pressure is now relentless. Nat wins the ball in midfield and pushes it through to Leigh. Again the shot is just over. It looks as though it is simply a matter time before a goal, but credit to the Rhiwbina defence who are forcing Pentyrch into taking shots from a distance or tight angles.
On the 47th minute a neat dink over the back line looks as though it might unlock the Rhiwbina defence, but Sam is just off balance and can't get enough power on the header.
On the 50th minute Pentyrch are awarded a free kick on the edge of the Rhiwbina box. Leigh lines it up and unleashes a powerful, low drive to pull off a superb save from Seb in the Rhiwbina goal, who just manages to palm it behind for a corner.
It’s the 55th minute and continuing Pentyrch pressure gets another corner. Leigh sends the ball over. It skims off the head of a Rhiwbina defender only to find Callum on the left. He returns the ball back across to the far side of the box, where Leigh meets it with a half volley on the angle only to see yet another shot fly just over. A minute later and a thrusting run down the left by Leigh ends with a fierce low drive across the face of the goal but no one is able to get a foot to the ball. As well as Pentyrch pressure, Pentyrch frustration is building.
With Pentyrch applying so much pressure there is always the danger they will get caught on the break. In the 65th minute George is drawn to the edge of his box to clear but a Rhiwbina player just gets a foot to the ball and lays it back. Rhiwbina’s Sam Cawley sees his chance and tries a chip shot on goal. George scrambles back and pulls off a brilliant save to tip the ball over the crossbar.
Having survived this close call, Pentyrch return to pressuring the Rhiwbina goal but with no joy. Kieran, with Scott dropping back, in the Rhiwbina defence, were doing an excellent job in frustrating the Pentyrch attack.
With two minutes to go and Pentyrch pressing forward, Rhiwbina claim the ball and set up an attack down their right flank. A quick cross and Dan Pike slots the ball into the back of the Pentyrch net to close out the game for Rhiwbina.
