Caerau Ely 0 V 1 Pentyrch Rangers
After a prolonged lay-off because of poor weather, today’s game against Caerau Ely at Trelai was the first for four weeks. Not surprisingly, the game lacked rhythm for most of the first half. And to begin there was a lot of chasing the ball without any real composure and direction.
. For the first fifteen minutes or so the game was fairly even as both teams probed and tested each other. The game livened up on 20 minutes when Caerau created a shooting chance and their striker unleashed a cracking shot that looked certain to find the back of the net. George had other ideas and dived across the face of the goal to finger-tip the ball behind for a corner. From the initial corner the ball was scrambled away but only to the edge of the box. Another Caerau shot on goal. As George set to gather it he slipped on the muddy surface. But somehow, as he was falling he managed to twist and get a fingertip to the ball to keep it out of the net.
Buoyed by having come close to taking the lead, Caerau began to press their advantage. Pentyrch’s defence held firm and slowly began to get some continuity into their game. Although, on 35 minutes, as Pentyrch were beginning to assert themselves, a long clearance from the Caerau goalkeeper put their striker in the clear. Yet again another superb save from George ensured Pentyrch kept a clean sheet going into half-time.

Half-time: Caerau Ely 0 - 0 Pentyrch Rangers
.
From the start of the second half Pentyrch took control and within a minute had forced a corner. Harry put over an excellent cross, but Caerau scrambled clear. With more composure on the ball, Pentyrch began to create more chances. Harry’s slide-rule passes out of defence were beginning to find gaps in the Caerau defence. Perhaps too many were called offside but the momentum was building and a goal was just a matter of time.
. On the 62 minute Harry on the left, before prodding it across the edge of the box. Will controlled the pass, picked his spot and ‘lasered’ the ball at goal. With the excellent Caerau goalkeeper beaten the ball just caught the underside of the crossbar and ricocheted back out. Caerau clear and counter-attack, which Lucas breaks up. He then finds Sam with a long through ball. Sam lays back the ball to Leigh who, from twenty five yards out, volleys the ball with the outside of his foot; it dips and swerves to give the Caerau goalkeeper no chance. Caerau Ely 0 - 1 Pentyrch Rangers.
Pentyrch now take control of the game as they press forward on a tiring Caerau who are finding it more and more difficult to launch counter-attacks. On the 68 minute another searing run from Callum on the left and the ball is fizzed to Will on the edge of the box. Will cracks the ball goalward, but while the goalkeeper is beaten, the Caerau centre-back has gotten his body in the way and the ball ricochets back out.
With five minutes to go Caerau begin to build the pressure as they sense Pentyrch getting nervous about maintaining their lead. On the 79th minute Caerau win a corner. The ball is cleared by the Pentyrch defence, finding Sam on the half-way line. He puts through a superbly weighted ball for Callum who is through on goal. Just as he is about to pull the trigger, the Caerau centre-back pulls him down with a slide tackle. Calls for a penalty! But the referee awards a free-kick on the edge of the box. Callum steps up to take the kick but it is blocked and cleared and is the last meaningful play of the game.
