Cardiff & District Football Cup: Round 1 19 October 2013

.

Cardiff Hibernian 2 V 6 Pentyrch Rangers
Today’s game against Cardiff Hibernian was the first round of the 2013/14 Cardiff & District Cup. With two divisions separating the teams it looked as though Pentyrch should have too much for Hibs. But if football is anything, it is unpredictable.
Having won all their games this season, Hibs were not about to be overawed and straight from kick-off were quickly pressing every Pentyrch player. In just the second minute Hibs played a high ball into the Pentyrch box. A lack of communication created some confusion and what was meant to be a clearing header saw the ball looping backwards and into the net for an own goal.
For the next ten minutes Pentyrch struggled to get a hold of the game as Hibs chased and contested every ball and player. With Hibs also resorting to long balls over the top the task of getting any rhythm into the game was made difficult for Pentyrch.  On 13 minutes, as Pentyrch were trying to get some passing movement into the game, the ball was lost and a speculative looping cross into the box found the top left corner of the net to put Hibs  2 - 0 in front.
Perhaps it was just a matter of time before a mix of over-excitement and Hibs energy running down would lead to mistakes creeping into their game. On 17 minutes, Hibs conceded a foul 10 yards inside their own half.  Leigh lined up the free kick and sent the ball into the box. Matt rose to meet the ball with his header saved only by the cross bar. Will was perfectly positioned for the rebound and made no mistake in putting the ball in the back of the net.
For the next twenty minutes Hibs fought a determined rearguard action as Pentyrch pressed for the equaliser. Throughout the first half they deployed their offside trap well, but right on the stroke of half-time, Sam beat the trap and was on to a clearance from Tyrone. As Sam reached the box he was having to hold off two defenders. Having got around the one, the second brought him down to concede the penalty.  With the last kick of the half, Leigh kept his cool and rifled the ball into the net.

For the first ten minutes of the second half the Hibs dogged defence held out, but on 50 minutes Callum joined the game and an increasingly tired Hibs defence just couldn’t cope with his pace and skill.  The threat he posed also helped to create space and opportunities across the team that paid off with three goals in a little over five minutes.
On 52 minutes Liam won the ball in midfield before spreading it wide to Tom E, whose pace and power took him past the Hibs defence. He then fizzed a cross into the box, which Sam turned into the net.
Three minutes later and Sam capitalises on a Hibs mistake to get his second goal.
On the 58th minute Callum picks up the ball deep inside his own half and sets off on a dazzling run, cutting through the Hibs defence, before slotting the ball through for Sam to get his hat-trick.
With the game all but won, the pressure on Hibs eases as the intensity goes out of the game.
On the 75th minute, Callum receives the ball from a left-sided throw-in. He turns the one defender before beating two more as he cuts a diagonal line to the edge of the Hibs penalty area, and unleashes an unstoppable shot.
Final Score: Cardiff Hibernian 2 - 6 Pentyrch Rangers
