Pentwyn 2 V 1 Pentyrch Rangers, 10 April 2014

.
Pentwyn 2  V 1 Pentyrch Rangers
This was the last match of the season and one in which Pentyrch struggled to get any cohesion and rhythm into their game. It was not for lack of effort and willingness on the part of the players. It was just one of those games when we were unable to sustain the  patterns of play that have served us well for most of the season.

From the kick-off Pentwyn pressed hard and won two corners within the first five minutes, both of which George gathered in safely.  On 6 minutes Pentwyn win a free kick. Callum takes for Pentwyn and attempts a shot on goal.  Again George deals with the threat.  Just a minute later and Pentwyn win another freekick, which Jake takes. George again ensures that Pentyrch survive this early period of pressure from Pentwyn.

On 10 minutes Pentyrch win a free kick on the half way line.  Determined to put some pressure on his opposite number George steps up. His long, looping attempt is just wide of the Pentwyn post.

As they settle, Pentyrch find themselves getting more of the game.  With 14 minutes on the clock Pentyrch win a corner which Leigh takes. Doug rises to meet the ball but his header is just over the bar.

Half way through the first period and both teams are battling hard for control of the midfield, with neither getting the upper hand for any sustained period. Pentwyn almost break the deadlock when their long throw specialist Chris launches a ball into the Pentyrch box. Charlie rises to connect but his header is just wide.

Another chance falls to Pentwyn on 36 minutes when Charlie wins the ball for Pentwyn in the middle of the park. He notices George off his line and tries a looping shot from distance but the attempt is just over.

Two minutes later and it is Pentyrch applying the pressure when they win a free kick.  Leigh shoots but his attempt is deflected behind for a corner; this is safely cleared by Pentwyn and half-time is reached with both goals still intact.

Half time Pentwyn 0 – 0 Pentyrch

From the restart both teams look to gain the upper hand. On 41 minutes Leigh wins the ball on the edge of the box and fires off a shot but the Pentwyn goalie pulls off a good save. Two minutes later and it's Pentwyn patiently building an attack which results in Charlie having a shot on goal, but the attempt is wide.

On 45 minutes Pentwyn win a freekick that skims the crossbar.  From the Pentyrch clearance, Harry slides a ball through to Harrison in open play; he beats one man and unleashes  one of his trademark cannonball shots. The Pentwyn goalkeeper pulls off a good save to deny Pentyrch the opportunity to take the lead.

With 47 minutes gone Pentwyn are awarded a free kick. Jake launches the ball into the Pentyrch box.  The resulting header is turned behind for a corner  by George. Pentwyn launch the corner ball into Pentyrch's penalty box and cause chaos. Twice quick successive Pentwyn strikes hit the Pentyrch crossbar before the ball is eventually scrambled clear.

With their tails up Pentwyn sustain their pressure and a minute later again get off a shot on goal. The ball ricochets off a Pentyrch defender to land at the feet of Corey who fires off a shot to score the first goal of the match.   Pentwyn 1 – 0  Pentyrch

Looking to press home their advantage Pentwyn return immediately to the attack and Corey again brings out a good save from George.

The game again turns and a minute later pressure from Will in the Pentwyn box sees him win the ball; keeping a cool head he threads the ball to Callum who shoots and scores to bring Pentyrch level.   Pentwyn 1 – 1  Pentyrch

For the next fifteen minutes or so neither team is able to gain the upper hand as both sets of players refuse to concede ground.  As the match enters it's final ten minutes, Pentyrch's commitment and attitude is exemplified by Tom A who tracks back 40 yards to put in a great cover tackle on Danny to stop him getting off a shot on goal.

Two minutes later and Tom A is in attacking mode at the other end of the park but his shot is just over. Pentyrch enter a spell in which they get some rhythm into their game. On 73 minutes a free kick from Leigh into the box is met by Liam but his  header is just over. Immediately Pentwyn counter attack. Danny beats two defenders and gets off a shot but it is wide.

With 75 minutes gone Doug plays a superb through ball into the Pentwyn penalty box that splits their defence but no one is able to get on the end of it.  A minute later, to add insult to injury, Pentwyn are awarded a free kick on the edge of the Pentyrch penalty box. Danny fires off a shot which is deflected, wrong-footing George and finding the back of the net to secure the game for Pentwyn.  Pentwyn 2 – 1 Pentyrch

Marlborough Black 2 V 1 Pentyrch Rangers 5 April 2014

.
Marlborough Black 2  V 1 Pentyrch Rangers
Following the first five minutes of settling into the game, it was Harrison who got off the first real shot on goal, a terrific volley, which brought out an equally good save by the Marlborough goalkeeper.  But within the minute Marlborough counter attacked and won a penalty, which they duly converted.  Marlboro Black 1 – 0 Pentyrch Rangers
Buoyed by their goal Marlborough continued to apply the pressure with long balls out to the wings.  In the early stages of the game Marlborough adapted more quickly to the condition of the pitch, which made playing decent football all but impossible.  Given what a good footballing team Marlborough are it can only have been extremely frustrating season for them having to play their home games on this pitch.
And Pentyrch were to get a sense of this frustration. With 10 minutes gone another defensive misjudgement on a quagmire of a pitch and another penalty conceded.  Marlborough Black 2 – 0 Pentyrch Rangers.
Stung into action, Pentyrch began to adapt and to apply pressure. On 12 minutes a great attack down the left started by Nick and carried through by Callum before pushing the ball on to Nat ends with the Marlborough goalie making a good save.  For the next fifteen minutes the game is more balanced as both teams look to create opportunities.
On 23 minutes Nat wins a ball on the left hand side and feeds Leigh with a great through ball. But Leigh is just off-balance and his shot is always rising over the bar.
Three minutes later and Dana launches an attack for Marlborough putting in a great cross to Joel who knocks the ball back into the box for Ollie.  A great save by George denies Marlborough a third goal.
Marlborough are beginning to regain the ascendancy.  On 30 minutes, just as Dana is about to release Joel with an open path to goal, Tom A puts in a great cover tackle to snuff out the threat.
With 36 minutes gone it is Pentyrch who now start to take control of the game. Nick wins the ball before feeding through to Harrison. He turns the Marlborough defender before releasing a great through ball to Leigh. He puts in a first time cross to Liam but his header is just over the bar.
On 38 minutes Tyrone claims the ball to break up a Marlborough attack before driving forwards and launching a cross field ball to Callum. He ships the ball down the line to Leigh who puts in another  great cross. It forces Marlborough into conceding a corner, which they go on to scramble clear.
Half-time: Marlboro Black 2 – 0 Pentyrch Rangers
Pentyrch settle quickly into the second half, begin to gain the ascendancy and ratchet up the pressure on the Marlborough defence.
With 52 minutes gone, Callum receives the ball from a throw-in, beats his man down the left before sending a great ball into the box.  The Marlborough goalie is just able to tip it over the bar.  From the resulting corner Leigh sends the ball into the box. Lucas gets off a shot on target, but the Marlborough goalie gathers safely.
Two minutes later and a great run by Callum done the right to reach the goal line ends with him crossing the ball into the box. Tom A  receives the ball and gets in a shot; the ball ricochets out, landing at the feet of Lucas. He puts in a strike on goal but Marlborough again scramble clear.  With the pressure Pentyrch have been applying it would now seem only a matter of time before the Marlborough goal is breached.
But when playing Marlborough it is impossible to relax for a second.  In spite of all the Pentyrch pressure, on 56 minutes Marlborough launch a counter attack.  It is only quick thinking by Matt whose pace carries him across the pitch to cut out the threat.
On 62 minutes George is quickly off his line to claim the ball and thwart a Marlborough attack. Then with one of his trademark long kicks he finds a gap in the Marlborough defence. Leigh is quickly onto the ball and seeing the Marlborough goalkeeper off his line he lobs him from some 30 yards out to score.  Pentyrch Rangers 1 – 2 Marlborough Black
For the next five minutes Pentyrch apply intense pressure on the Marlborough goal. Callum, Tom A, and Sam all get off good shots on goal, but each time the Marlborough defence scramble the ball away. On 68 minutes Tom E receives the ball from a throw-in. He drives down the line sending the ball past one side of the defender while he goes the other before cutting inside  to unleash a terrific shot.  Without knowing too much about it, a Marlborough defender deflects the ball for corner.
With 70 minutes gone, a long speculative shot from Matt out on the left almost catches the goalkeeper off guard. Yet again the excellent  Marlborough goalie just manages to tip the ball over the bar to concede a corner. Leigh takes the corner but Marlborough clear.  A minute later and Callum wins another corner on the right hand side. The ball is again launched into the box.  This time Marlborough lay claim to the ball and bring it away but then concede a free kick some 30 yards out.
Leigh lines up the ball and puts in a great shot, only to be denied yet again by the Marlborough goalie tipping the ball over the bar. The ball is again sent into the box and Pentyrch win yet another corner.  Again heroic, last-ditch defending by Marlborough clears the danger.
With so many of Pentyrch’s players pressing forward Marlborough's clearance quickly turns into a counter attacking threat, but a thundering tackle from Ethan cuts out the danger.
With a minute to go Pentyrch win a free kick just on the half way line. George comes forward to launch the ball into the Marlboro box. But in what has been the story of the day, Marlborough scramble the ball clear yet again to take the game and all three points.

Pentyrch Rangers V Whitchurch, 29 March 2014

.
 Pentyrch Rangers 2  V 2  Whitchurch
From the kick-off, Whitchurch set out their stall: they pressed the ball relentlessly and played a controlled game with their precise passing. For the first fifteen minutes or so Pentyrch struggled to maintain possession as Whitchurch pressed hard to win back the ball whenever they lost it.  With 14 minutes gone Whitchurch’s pressure won them a corner.  Catching Pentyrch off-guard they played the ball short; the Whitchurch player then drove the ball low and hard into the box and it was turned in for a goal.  It was a well executed move.  Pentyrch 0 – 1 Whitchurch.
Pentyrch slowly began to assert  control of the ball keeping it more on the ground and playing to feet.  But still Whitchurch kept up the pressure and refused Pentyrch the time to settle.  It was a question of whether Whitchurch could sustain the intensity of their pressure for the full game.
The Whitchurch strategy worked and they continued to have the better of the play forcing Pentyrch into making mistakes.  With 25 minutes gone Whitchurch were awarded a free kick but their shot on goal is over the bar.  Although Whitchurch had been doing most of the pressing, the Pentyrch defence refused to give an inch.  Harrison, Matt, Ethan and Tyrone battled for every ball. Doug was a rock in the middle of the back line, constantly claiming and frustrating Whitchurch attempts to create openings.
Slowly Pentyrch begin to make an impression.  On 32 minutes Lucas clears a Whitchurch attack sending the ball to Leigh who, with a first time layoff, passes it on to Will.   Although he wrong-foots the defender and gets off a shot on goal, he is off-balance and the attempt is wide of the mark.
For the remainder of the half Pentyrch weather the Whitchurch storm, but the pressure begins slowly to subside.
Half-time: Pentyrch 0 – 1 Whitchurch
At the beginning of the second half Nick, Callum, and Tom A. join the field of play.  With the defence having done an excellent job in keeping Whitchurch at bay, fresh defenders and the pace of Callum was an opportunity to reverse the pressure. Pentyrch now began to assert themselves.  Whitchurch begin to tire and their concentration lapses.  With 50 minutes on the clock, Leigh notices the Whitchurch goalie has come off his line.  He tries a cheeky lob-shot, but it just catches the post and goes behind for a goalkick.
With 53 minutes gone Pentyrch are awarded a free kick.  Leigh lines up the ball and takes a shot on goal. The goalie miskicks and the ball only reaches the edge of the box, where it drops to Tom A. Tom takes sight on goal and with a laser accuracy sends the ball into the top right hand corner of the goal.  Pentyrch 1 – 1 Whitchurch
Stirred by conceding a goal Whitchurch pressure the Pentyrch goal and win two quick corners in succession but the threat is cleared and Pentyrch return to  the attack.  With 61 minutes gone Tom A, Will and Callum set up a great inter-passing movement down the right hand side of the pitch sending the final ball to Liam. He gets in a fierce shot on goal but a good save by the Whitchurch goalkeeper denies Pentyrch the opportunity to take the lead.
With 65 minutes gone Whitchurch set up a counter-attack and win a corner.  They send the ball into the box but Doug is on hand to head clear.  The ball falls to a Whitchurch player just outside the box and he fires off a terrific first-time volley, which is just over the bar. If it had gone in it would have been a candidate for goal of the season.
Two minutes later and Nick claims the ball before shipping it on to Liam.  He passes out of defence to Will. Seeing an opportunity to breach the Whitchurch defence Will ‘dinks’ the ball over their defence for Sam, who uses his pace to get to it first, but his shot is deflected for a corner.
Leigh comes across to take the corner and sends a perfectly flighted ball to the far side of the goal. Tyrone rises above everyone else and with a perfect header back across the goal puts Pentyrch into the lead.  Pentyrch 2 – 1 Whitchurch.
With Whitchurch continuing to tire, Liam is really beginning to control things in the middle of the park. On 68 minutes he wins the ball and loses his defender with a 'roulette' turn, before switching play with a perfectly weighted cross-field ball to Sam.  He then sends the ball into the box but Whitchurch scramble clear.  Tom E now joins the action.  The 70th minute sees Will, Leigh, and Callum linking up with a slick passing movement to feed the ball to Lucas.  He fires off an excellent shot on the Whitchurch goal but their goalie pulls off yet another good save.
With Pentyrch looking more and more comfortable, Whitchurch launch a counter-attack and win a corner in the 72nd minute.  They send the ball into the box and get off a strike on goal.  George looks to have it covered but the ball squirms under his body and into the goal. Pentyrch 2 – 2 Whitchurch.
With both teams tiring  the end of the game is reached with no further changes to the scoreline.

Full-time: Pentyrch Rangers 2 - 2 Whitchurch.

Fairwater 2 V 2 Pentyrch Rangers, Cardiff & District U16 Football

.
Fairwater 2  V 2 Pentyrch Rangers
For the first ten minutes both teams probed each other’s defence and adapted to what was a very ‘bobbly’ pitch.  Nick, Tyrone, Harrison and Doug dealt well with an unpredictable ball and made a number of good cutout tackles.

Just after 10 minutes Fairwater’s King Junior attempted the first serious shot on goal from either team, but it was just wide of the post.
On 17 minutes a one-two between Leigh and Will, followed by a through ball to Sam ended with a good strike on goal. The goalie spills but a Fairwater defender was on hand to clear the ball.
A minute later and a ball from Sam to Leigh on the left results in another strike on goal but the Fairwater goalie makes a good save.
From the clearance Fairwater launch one of their trademark counter-attacks which ends with a fierce strike and a goal looks certain but Tyrone somehow gets to the ball to make an amazing goal-line clearance.
On 26 minutes a ball down the line from Harrison finds Harry who wins a corner. Fairwater scramble the corner clear.  Liam reclaims the ball on the left hand side and sends over a cross. Harry rises to meet the ball with his head but it just loops over the bar.
On the half-hour mark, Leigh sends a long throw-in into the Fairwater penalty box. Fairwater seem to have the situation under control, but the pitch has other ideas causing the defender to scuff his clearing kick: the ball deflects and slips under the Fairwater goalie's body to give Pentyrch the lead. Pentyrch 1 –  0 Fairwater
From the restart Fairwater launch an attack down the left and send the ball into the box. As George attempts to put in a clearing kick the ball it hits a divot and finds its way into the back of the net.  Deja Vu and an element of poetic justice.  Fairwater 1 – 1 Pentyrch.
On 33 minutes Pentyrch almost regain the lead when Leigh intercepts a Fairwater move and races through a gap between two defenders but his strike is just over the bar.
Two minutes later and a left-field cross from Leigh drops for Will.  Again the pitch has the final word: Will scuffs the ball and the Fairwater goal remains intact.
With two minutes to go until half-time Leigh wins a free kick  close to the left touchline. He steps up and crosses the ball into the box at the far post.  Will launches himself forward in an attempt to turn the ball into the net but the goalie palms  the ball away just as Will is about to make contact with his outstretched foot.

Half Time: Fairwater 1  V 1 Pentyrch Rangers
Two minutes into the half and Leigh wins another free kick on the left. The cross is cleared to touch by Fairwater
A minute later and Matt turns defence into attack, carrying the ball down the line before passing inside to Will who then moves it out to Harrison. He cuts inside but a great curving strike is saved by the Fairwater goalie.
As Pentyrch increase the pressure, Matt crosses to Harry in the middle of the park. Harry brings the ball down before shipping it on to Leigh on the right.  An excellent right footed shot is saved by the Fairwater goalie.
On 48 minutes Fairwater launch an attack and with their neat, precise passing carve out an opening to get off a good strike on goal but the shot is wide. Pentyrch’s holding midfielders, Liam and Lucas have had an excellent game against a very skilful and quick Fairwater midfield.  For the best part of the game both sets of midfielders have given away very little in what has been a fascinating tussle.
ON 50 minutes Doug claims a header on the halfway line directing it with precision to Leigh, who slides the ball goalwards for Sam to contest. The goalie fumbles and Sam claims to lay it back to Will, but Will's shot is wide.
Two minutes later and Fairwater launch an attack leading to a fierce strike on goal.  Sam has no chance of evading the strike and the ball hits him on the hand and a penalty is given. Fran steps up for Fairwater and slots the ball home.  Fairwater 2 – 1 Pentyrch
Pentyrch immediately launch an attack from the restart and Leigh wins yet another free kick. His shot on goal is just over the bar.
On 56 minutes Fairwater win a corner. The ball is sent to the far side of the box and then dinked back in, creating chaos, but after three or four Fairwater strikes on goal the ball is finally scrambled away.
Fairwater are now defending hard to maintain their lead.  On 63 minutes they break up a Pentyrch attack to counter.  Turning the tables, Harry reclaims the ball, drives forward and puts in a great cross to find Liam at the far post, but his header is saved.
Two minutes later and quick thinking by George to claim the ball breaks up a Fairwater attack.  A well directed throw finds Harry who carries the ball before putting through a precision pass to Ethan.  He quickly ships on to Liam who slides the ball into the box  for Sam. As Sam contests the ball, confusion between the defender and goalie sees the ball bobble into the Fairwater net.   Fairwater 2 – 2 Pentyrch
On 70 minutes Pentyrch are awarded a free kick. Leigh crosses into the box. Sam attempts a volley but his timing is just a fraction out and his shot is just wide. It was so close to being the strike of the season.
With both teams tiring gaps began to open up but last ditch defending by both teams kept their respective goals intact.

Full-time: Fairwater 2  V 2 Pentyrch Rangers
